My “A Second Look” project has moved on to the 1840 United States Federal Census for Josiah Askew II.
In 1840, Josiah II (located 10th from the bottom) was recorded during enumeration as having five slaves: one male under age 10, estimated to be born between 1830 and 1840; one male between the ages of 10 and 23, estimated to be born between 1817 and 1830; two female slaves under the age of 10, estimated to be born between 1830 and 1840; one female slave between the ages of 24 and 35, likely born between 1805 and 1816.
Based on the information that is available, I’m making educated guesses. The male under age 10 could be Jack, as he was born ~1829. The second male, between the ages of 10 and 23 could be George, as he was born ~1826. One of the two female slaves under age 10 could be Ailsey, as she was born ~1834. The other female slave under the age of 10 is unknown, but the probability that she is the 16-year-old, mulatto, female from the 1860 United States Federal Census – Slave Schedule is high. Lastly, the one female slave between the ages of 24 and 35 is most likely Lida. I have no exact year of birth for her, but I’ve estimated that she was born between 1800 and 1806.
New questions: How and where did Josiah II “acquire” Lida, and where was she in 1830?
